what music therapy is

It isn’t a music lesson, and it isn’t entertainment

Music therapy is a clinical discipline. It uses music — playing, singing, listening, writing — to work on goals that usually have nothing to do with music: speech and communication, motor control, emotional regulation, memory, and connection.

A session might look like play, or like a quiet conversation with a guitar in the room. Underneath it there’s an assessment, a written plan, and notes that track whether the thing we’re trying is working.

Your child does not need to be musical. Neither does your parent. That isn’t what any of this depends on.

Briana Wu, MT-BC

Briana is a board-certified music therapist and the founder of Agape Music Therapy. She trained at the University of the Pacific and completed her clinical internship at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Her work has spanned memory care, pediatric oncology, hospice, and intensive care. Guitar is her primary instrument, though sessions draw on whatever helps each person reach their goals

I’ve have impacted lives of populations in memory care, pediatric oncology, hospice, special needs, and ICU

Music is a language that transcends all other boundaries.

What it costs

Agape is a fee-for-service practice, paid directly by families. There’s no insurance billing and no waiting on an authorization — you book the call, and if it’s a fit we can usually start within a week or two. Full rates are listed on the rates page.

Serving the South Bay

Our studio is in Cupertino, and a lot of the work happens somewhere else: homes, schools, day programs, memory care communities, and hospice bedsides. We see clients in Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, San Jose, Saratoga, Los Gatos, Campbell, Los Altos, and Mountain View. Virtual sessions are available where they suit the client.
